About

On Friday 28 November 1919, the Governor-General turned the first sod to signify the beginning of construction of the Hume Dam. This display looks at the triumphs and tragedies of the first years of the Hume Dam construction. Constructed over a 17-year period between 1919 and 1936, the Hume Dam is an icon of the Albury-Wodonga region. When finished in 1936, Hume Dam was the biggest in the southern hemisphere and one of the largest in the world. Through a vast collection of photographs, Turning the Sod: Building the Hume Dam will look at the various elements that come together on such a significant project.
