About

Starting on August 28, Mulga Bicycle Tours will be honouring Sarah Maddock, the first woman to cycle from Sydney to Melbourne in 1894, with a 14 day tour. This 125th anniversary tour is the initiative of another Sarah Maddock who Googled her name and came across her namesake, which led her to research further about Sarah’s life with the aim of designing and co-hosting this fully supported ride 125 years later. The route is a modern day version of Sarah’s 1894 achievement, as riding the Hume Highway would be more gruelling than enjoyable. Instead the ride will take in some new towns such as Cootamundra and Wagga Wagga, and in Victoria you will explore the Murray to Mountains and Great Victorian rail trails, which will give a sense of what the scenery and ambience would have been like for Sarah. The tour will cycle through: Narellan, Bundanoon, Goulburn, Yass, Cootamundra, Wagga Wagga, Albury, Beechworth, Whitfield, Mansfield, Yea and Melbourne. Mulga Bicycle Tours will be trading in the corsets and bloomers, for your preferred cycling attire and while the route may be slightly different the essence of celebrating the adventurous spirit of Sarah is at the heart of the ride.
