Kintsugi Makie Painting Workshop

At this unique workshop hosted by Yoko Kawada, you will learn how to apply the final surface finish of Kintsugi, Japanese golden ceramic repair. The Makie technique is the Japanese traditional craft that was developed over 1500 years ago and refers to Urushi lacquer painting, which is sprinkled with gold or silver powder as decoration using a brush or sprinkle tube. This technique has also been used as final decorative process of Kintsugi. In this class you will learn how to apply Japanese Urushi lacquer on a prepared and mended tea saucer and finish with gold brass powder to create an original tea set to bring home. In this introductory class you will use a type of Urushi lacquer that is non allergic and cures faster (in three-four days) and gold colour brass powder. The workshop is a part of their participation at Monster Mouse Studios for the Midjuburi Creative Trails Weekend by the Inner West Council during the first weekend of August.
