What happens during clinics:

  • Your child will be reviewed by a Specialist Respiratory Paediatric Physician. A detailed history will be taken about their respiratory symptoms e.g. cough, wheeze, frequency of admissions for respiratory infections, shortness of wind, sleep issues.
  • Chest x-ray may be ordered if required.
  • A Respiratory Scientist will measure your child’s lung function using a number of portable specialised lung function tests. Results of these tests will assist in the diagnosis and monitoring of any lung problems.
  • A Physiotherapist will help to educate you and your child on lung conditions and particularly lung clearance and exercise techniques.
  • A respiratory nurse will help support and educate you and your child on their diagnosis and ensure correct use of their medications and devices.
  • Children and their families will be offered support if requiring referral to Queensland Children’s Hospital for further investigations.
  • The Project Officer also works with the local community to support clinic attendance and to ensure cultural integrity.

Indigenous Respiratory Outreach Care

 

The Indigenous Respiratory Outreach Care (IROC) team provides specialist paediatric respiratory (lung health) outreach clinics to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and young people in rural, remote and urban communities across Queensland.

The service identifies and treats children with lung issues (disease) and raises awareness of respiratory diseases through community engagement, lung health education and partnerships with local health providers.

The team also provides respiratory education and training to local health care staff and conducts research aimed at improving the health of children, young people and their communities.

The Indigenous Respiratory Outreach Care Program is a Queensland Health Statewide Respiratory Clinical Network initiative delivered in partnership with The Prince Charles Hospital, Metro North Hospital and Health Service. The service is funded under the National Partnership Agreement on Closing the Gap in Indigenous Health Outcomes.
