In this innovative presentation, ANAM’s head of piano, Timothy Young, will lead a team of ANAM pianists in a round-robin through Beethoven’s masterwork, at two pianos. Along with Bach’s Goldberg Variations, Beethoven’s set of 33 variations on a theme by his contemporary Anton Diabelli is considered a pinnacle of the keyboard repertoire. Beethoven takes Diabelli’s simple waltz melody and transforms into myriad expressive shapes, in an epic work that, over the course of an hour or so, reaches deeply into a vast emotional world. In many ways this is music that touches on the essence of our humanity.
