About

An exhibition which explores the social history of Montague, a unique part of South Melbourne that existed as a residential area between 1870 and the 1960s. As a working class residential enclave, the impact of Victoria’s boom and bust economy from the late 1800s through to the 1930s Depression was felt by this community who relied on work in nearby factories and on the wharves. These conditions and experiences produced a small cohesive community with an assured sense of identity and belonging. Montague's story is told through first hand accounts, archival material and photographs from the Port Phillip City Collection.
